People are Always Asking Me "What is Appropriate to Wear to....?"

Diane Pollack

Last weekend I went to my high school reunion. My high school friends knew that I was the go-to person to figure out what to wear to this event.

This was a tricky one, I will admit. The event started at the school from 3-6 (afternoon event) and then my class was having a dinner after (evening event).

I did know  that most of my classmates were not typically into fashion, were generally a more casual bunch and yet after so many years, everyone still wants to look good.

This time of year people are invited to all kinds of events; weddings, graduations, reunions and more.  But even all year around I get asked this question, for instance, from people not knowing what to wear on a date. No matter where you are going, I always give the same guidelines to figure it out.

QUESTION #1 -  Where are you going?
This could mean the actual venue. For instance, is the reunion held in the high school or a fancy event space. It can also mean, if you are going out of town for a wedding, perhaps the location lends itself to being more casual than a New York Wedding.

QUESTION #2 - Daytime or evening?
Generally one would dress up a little more for an evening event than an afternoon one

QUESTION #3 - What is considered appropriate for this location /event?
There willalways be people on the dressier side and people on the more casual side.

Once you are clear of where you are going, you can be sure that every location /venue /event has a whole range of attire that is considered appropriate.

Now open your closet.

QUESTION #4 - What is in your closet that you love to wear, feel great in, maybe get compliments on, that is within the range of appropriate?
Take out - wear and ENJOY!

If nothing fits the bill in your closet, time to go shopping. But at least you have some parameters on what to wear, yet you do not feel boxed in, that it has to be so specific. You never really know what is in the stores (or online) until you get there.

Enjoy dressing to feel great at your events of the season and those in the future. Need more help with this assessment on what looks good on you or shopping help?
