I Have All This Stuff in my Closet, Now What?

Diane Pollack

Do you love to shop, but frankly you are not that good at it?

Maybe you pick up a piece here because you are "in the mood" and another there because it is on super-sale. There is no rhyme, reason or intention for your purchases and you don't even know what will work with your wardrobe.

If you are anything like my client Faith, you have a closet full of clothes, bags and accessories in every color that can mix and match into great outfits, but you don't really know how to put it all together. HELP!!!

So what happens?
Your outfits could end up looking like you closed your eyes, stuck your hand in the closet and pulled out whatever accessory was available instead of the perfect piece that you might actually own.

What to do?
Consider this like a mini-course on how to accessorize.

I am going to share with you my super easy and understandable tips that I teach my clients when I work with them.

I am sure that you have opened a magazine to see a perfectly curated page with items that fit a mood or theme.

When I was a designer we started every season with a mood board.

Check out the two above from Bazaar magazine. Notice that they both incorporate red, but have a very different mood or theme from each other.

Now I am going to ask you to imagine a third board. This one is a classic Chinese culture theme. I bet you also pictured red as one of the colors, along with black and gold.

Great!

Now let's talk about how you would accessorize board #1.
It is very graphic modern and linear. Your accessories should follow. Geometric shapes, bold modern silver pieces. (Is gold wrong? No, but silver has that more sleek modern feel for this group).

How about board #2?  It has an ethnic bohemian vibe. Are you going to put a bold geometric, silver piece with it?... NO. It is more about color than metal. Items with fringe, embroidery, and colorful beads are great choices.

Now your envisioned Chinese board. Again you are not going to accessorize with a bold silver piece. I am thinking of ornate and scrolly gold in keeping with the Chinese lantern feel. Maybe a black gold or red tassel.

KEY TIP TAKEAWAY - color can be very important to the mood of an outfit, but just because items share the same colors, does not mean they go together. Follow the mood of your clothing to help accessorize better.

Quiz for You: What if you have a safari jacket? Will you wear purple with it and what kind of accessories?

Answer - No purple, please. Colors that would work with the safari theme are sand, browns, and neutrals in that family. Maybe some corals to orange like a sunset. Accessories will be organic feeling in neutral brown colors. Wood or Ivory would be good choices.
