Why Trends are Like iPhones...

Diane Pollack

How do you know when a trend has gone out of style?

I once gave a live webinar where someone asked me this question. Although I think I gave a pretty decent answer on the spot, it made me really think about it some more after.

Trends are not stamped with an expiration date like milk. Although we all know that milk doesn't magically expire on that date either.

I came up with a great little analogy where I compare trends to iPhones: The people that are trendsetters are the first to have the newest iphone and the people with the flipphones are lagging in the dust.

Where do you sit on my iPhone scale below?

Iphone 7   You are a trendsetter and are first to have and be wearing the latest, you are a Fashionista and blogger-type. People look to you as a style icon.

Iphone 6 You always look great. You know exactly what the trends are and wear them well.

Iphone 5  You like fashion and dress fine but not super stylish. You pick up trends after you have seen them for a while and start to get them.

Iphone 4 Being on top of trends is not really your thing. Often a trend will already pass before you even know it is a trend. You are not trendy.

Flipphone  You don't know or care the first thing about trendsYour clothes may be extremely dated causing you to look like a relic and perhaps aging you (yikes!).

Note the scale is meant as an analogy and where you are on trends may be totally different from which phone you own. I recently upgraded my iPhone 4 to a 6 because I do not rate high on tech trends.

Did you find yourself in that scale?

So an iphone 7 would be over that trend once the iphone 5 or 6 picked up on it. For the people in the middle of the scale, trends will be valid for longer. Iphones 6 & 7 will immediately toss their old "phones" to get an update, but others will take longer.

Trends expiring is a natural evolution more than a set time or date. Depending on where you are on the scale will depend when the trend is over for you.

My intention as your personal stylist is not to take you from a flipphone to an iphone 7. You would be boggled by the "technology". However, if you identified as a flipphone you may want to get some professional assistance. This will help you be perceived by others as current and help you feel refreshed and empowered.

Most of the ladies I work with are iphone 4 and iphone 5. But no matter what Iphone you are, I can help you with your look.

So when the snow melts and you start taking down your spring clothes and are still not sure if the item in question is still valid for your style, think of me as your fashion tech.

I am starting to schedule spring closets, you can set up a phone call to discuss yours HERE.
