The Wedding Season Issue

Diane Pollack

What to wear, need a gift & more!

This time of year we often get invited to more weddings than usual. And one of the first questions is what to wear? Here are some general tips and guidelines that may be helpful.

Where is the location of the wedding?

For instance: If it is in the south during the day, you may find your black cocktail dress makes you stand out like a New Yorker.

If it is on the beach, flowy fabrics such as chiffon look nice. Stiff stains are too formal and warm. Think about your shoes. You are best with dressy flats or wedges. Don't ruin your stilettos in the sand.

Black tie vs. Cocktail- What does black-tie mean these days?
Well, like other dress codes black-tie has become less formal too.

Traditionally cocktail attire meant a short dressy dress and black-tie meant long formal dress.

But now it is quite appropriate to wear a shorter dress as long as
a) It has very dressy details such as beading or sequins or
b) You accessorize with formal accessories; rhinestone earrings, dressy clutches, and shoes.

You can even make some everyday work dresses become cocktail appropriate.
I recommend a solid color dress. Add all the dressy accessories mentioned above and you are set.

What if the dress code is vague?
"Dress to Impress"

Although this might confuse you, it is actually easier to dress for an event like this. Everyone has their own interpretation, so very little is inappropriate. You get leeway to have fun with it!
